Zonar Systems - FieldView Android App

Zonar Systems // FieldView

Helping teams keep track of equipment on the move

The problem

Zonar Systems’ fleet management software helps a variety of companies keep track of vehicles and other equipment in real-time. However, fleet managers are often out in the field when they need to track an asset, and calling the home office is tedious and inconvenient. What managers really needed was a mobile application that would allow them to track assets right from their smartphones.

My solution

Because a majority of their customers use Android devices, Zonar needed to create an Android mobile app. As lead UX and visual designer, I researched and utilized the latest patterns and components in Google’s Material Design guidelines to build a UI that would be familiar and easy to use.

I leveraged the existing user research and personas created by Zonar’s in-house design and product teams, and worked closely with them to build an app that reflected their brand and aesthetic. I created an interactive prototype to get buy-in from the marketing and sales teams, and detailed design documentation to help the development team create an accurate.

Sketches

Sketches are a great way to get buy-in from a client early on in a project. They’re fantastic to help gauge reactions to features themes. They also allow you to take creative risks, since they are so quick and easy to produce.

Early sketches for the Map View, List View, and Asset View of the application.

Sketches exploring autocomplete while searching.

Designs

As this was intended to be a native Android application, I leaned heavily on Google’s Material Design guidelines to inform my decisions.

In addition to designing the application, I also created the app icon.

In addition to designing the application, I also created the app icon.

Final versions of the login screen, and the main menu.

In Map View, assets “cluster” together when they appear too close to each other.

Various states of the default list view of the app, including an empty state.

Users can set destinations to meet in-motion assets to deliver supplies, or to inspect their vehicle.

Interactive Prototype

Using InVision, I created an interactive prototype of the application to conduct user testing. Sales representatives were also able to use the prototype to demo the product at an industry conference to garner interest in the app while it was still being developed.

Design Documentation

I created detailed redlines in Sketch to help the development team build the app accurately to the designs. I also created PDFs to organize all the design assets for various screen resolutions.

Results

First of its kind

The release of the FieldView app marked the first time a Zonar product was available for download through the Google Play store. This was the first, crucial step in Zonar’s strategy towards opening their platform to non-proprietary hardware.

Part of the team

Zonar was so impressed with my work as a contractor on this project they extended to me an offer of full-time employment.
